Tax on agrarian land owned by non-Muslims, distinct from the tax system for Muslim-owned agrarian land. First introduced after the Battle of Khaibar, when the Prophet Muhammad allowed Jews to return to their land on the condition they pay half of their produce as kharaj. The only taxes recognized by the Quran are the zakah (alms from Muslims) and jizyah (head tax from non-Muslims); kharaj is based on the legal principle of discretionary interests.
