One of two ruling clans in early seventh-century Medina, from which some of the first converts to Islam came. Upon Muhammad's death, the Khazraj decided to elect their own chief; in response, Abu Bakr was appointed caliph, successor to Muhammad's political leadership. The Khazraj eventually accepted his rule.
