Kho and the Origin of Death

Quick Reference

(San/Botswana, Namibia, South Africa)

Kho, the supreme being, the moon, sent an insect to earth to tell humans, “As I die, and dying live, so you shall also die, and dying live.” Along the way, the insect was overtaken by a hare. The insect told the hare of his mission. The hare said that he, a faster runner, would take the message. He ran off, and when he got to earth, he told humans that he had been sent by the moon to tell them, “As I die, and dying perish, in the same manner you shall also die and come wholly to an end.” When the hare told the moon what he had said, the moon struck him on the nose, which is why the hare's nose is slit.
