From the Spanish cayos, rocks, a small islet in the West Indies covered with scrub or sparse vegetation. The name was introduced into the English language by the buccaneers who infested that area in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. They are sometimes coral formations, sometimes outcrops of sand and rock.
