(b Waizenkirchen, 1857; d Vienna, 1941). Austrian composer. Cond. opera in Crefeld and Graz; 1st cond. Hamburg Opera 1890–2, court cond. Munich 1892–4. Adopted Wagnerian principles for his 10 operas and mus. plays, most successful being Der Evangelimann (The Evangelist) (1894). In 1918 wrote new nat. anthem for Austria which replaced Haydn's from 1920 to 1929, when Haydn's was reinstated.
