Quick Reference
A knee-length skirt of pleated tartan cloth, traditionally worn by men as part of Scottish Highland dress (and now also worn by women and girls). The wearing of the kilt was proscribed for a time after the Jacobite rising of 1745, as part of the policy to erode distinctive Highland practices.
