A highly specialized mitochondrion associated with the kinetosome of trypanosomes. Kinetoplast DNA is the only DNA known in nature that is in the form of a network consisting of interlocked circles. There are about 50 maxicircles and 5,000 minicircles per kinetoplast network. The maxicircles contain the genes essential for mitochondrial biogenesis. Unlike the maxicircles, the minicircles are not transcribed, and their function is unknown.
