California-born author, resident in Hawaii as a schoolteacher, wrote The Woman Warrior (1976), a partly fictional work about her girlhood as it was affected by the beliefs of her Chinese family, and China Men (1980), again blending family history and legendry in treating the lives of men in her family who left their Oriental culture to live and work in the U.S.
