Quick Reference

Immediately after the defeat of his supporters at Lincoln in May 1217, Louis, dauphin of France, began peace negotiations. They broke down in the summer but a further naval defeat at Sandwich persuaded him to agree terms. In exchange for a large indemnity, he renounced his claim to the crown of England.
