A short mast close to the cargo hatches of old-fashioned cargo ships from which was worked the smaller cargo derrick. In the days before container ships, when cargo was loaded and unloaded into lighters, kingposts were used where normal port cranes were not available or there was no room for the ship to lie alongside in port.
