Her ideas of the West, formed by such works as Chateaubriand's Atala, were considerably altered when she went to live on the frontier, as indicated in A New Home—Who'll Follow? (1839), written under the pseudonym Mrs. Mary Clavers, and reissued (1874) as Our New Home in the West.
