Quick Reference

Although he was often beset with credit problems, Kirkman’s ability to anticipate demand and identify gaps in the literary market ensured his longevity in the trade. He opened his first shop in 1653; the final imprint bearing his name is from 1680. He printed or sold 690 English plays—his catalogue was the basis for Gerard Langbaine's bibliography of English drama.
