In early Arabic, something written; soon thereafter, book. The Quran, which refers to itself as the “clear kitab,” is generally recognized as the earliest Arabic book. The Quran is sometimes referred to as “the Book” (al-kitab). Highly esteemed and sometimes lavishly decorated, books have remained central to the transmission of knowledge, often complemented by oral recitation and commentary.
