  German mathematician, who in his influential Erlanger Programm launched a unification of geometry, in which different geometries are classified by means of group theory. He is responsible for applying the terms ‘elliptic’ and ‘hyperbolic’ to describe non-Euclidean geometries and, in topology, he is remembered in the name of the Klein bottle.
