Quick Reference

Parasitism that is based on the theft of food from other organisms. Skuas (Stercorariidae) practise this form of parasitism upon gulls and terns. Ants often attempt this parasitism upon carnivorous plants, robbing them of their insect prey; one estimate suggests that carnivorous plants may lose as much as 50 per cent of their prey to kleptoparasites.
