Prof. of pf., Moscow Cons. 1868–81, settling in Berlin 1882, where he cond. Berlin PO and founded pf. cons. (1884), which merged in 1895 with Scharwenka's cons. Arr. Wagner's Ring for pf. Critical edn. of Chopin. Wrote many pf. pieces.
