Quick Reference

(1783–1838), popular Massachusetts hack writer, whose Biographical Sketches (1821) contains personal essays ornate and somewhat effusive in style. He then went on to his Lectures on American Literature (1829), an early attempt to study a generally unrecognized subject, but, because he could not find enough material, Knapp padded his book with chapters on The Naval Character of Our Country and other rather remote literary material.
