US computer scientist. Graduating with a doctorate in mathematics in 1963, Knuth was already working with computers. Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University since 1968, his many contributions to computer science include attribute grammar, LR parsing, algorithms such as the Knuth-Bendix algorithm and the Knuth-Morris-Pratt algorithm, the monumental The Art of Computer Programming, and the TeX typesetting and METAFONT typeface design systems.
