Large squamous cells seen in stained cervical smears and indicative of precancerous lesions. They have enlarged pyknotic nuclei often with a clear halo surrounding the nucleus. Koilocytosis is induced by human papillomavirus infection of the superficial epithelial cells of the uterine cervix.
