Quick Reference

This epic of the Tulu-speaking people of southern India tells the story of the magical and apparently virgin-born (see Virgin Birth) hero (see hero Quest) Kordabbu, who, although of a low caste, is raised by an upper caste family after he is orphaned. Kordabbu is a trickster and a miracle maker whom the king finds threatening. The king tricks the hero into entering a well, where he is trapped until he is freed by the magic of a young woman named Tani, who then becomes his “sister” to preserve her virtue. The two travel about performing magical acts and are much revered.
