Quick Reference

The site, in Orissa, of an immense 13th-century temple to the Sun god Sūrya (the Sūrya Deul, also known as the ‘Black Pagoda’), built by King Narasiṃhadeva I (1238–64). Although the temple is now ruined, its design, as the god's chariot, drawn by seven horses, is still evident, as are many of its sculptures, some of them erotic in theme, although the original significance of this remains a matter of debate.
