An energetic dance in 2/4 time from the Krakow district in Poland, performed both by couples or by larger numbers of dancers. Characterized by syncopated rhythms, stamping footwork, and clicked heels it was very popular in Romantic ballets, and was danced by Elssler in La Gypsy (1839).
