German post-Kantian philosopher, educated at Jena and much influenced by Fichte and Schelling. He developed Kant's views in the direction of pantheism and mysticism, giving a result he christened ‘panentheism’, promising historical progress to a fusion of world and spirit which in some ways anticipated Hegel.
