Town in Lower Austria on the north bank of the River Danube at its confluence with the River Krems. In the 15th century three important Late Gothic churches were built under the influence of the workshop of the Stephansdom in Vienna: the hall church of St Nicholas (1464) in Stein, the Piaristenkirche (1457–1515) in Krems and the Bürgerspitalkirche (1470) also in Krems.
