German dancer, choreographer, and teacher. He studied with Wigman, joined Hanover Ballet in 1922 and Berlin State Opera (1924–1926), then from 1928 to 1931 gave recitals in America and Europe with Yvonne Georgi, his partner becoming Ruth Page in 1931. Renowned for his theatricality and humour, as well as for his inventive use of costumes and masks, he became his generation's leading male exponent of German modern dance. He continued working under the Nazis and resumed international touring after the war, retiring in 1959. He opened his own school in Bern in 1955.
