(Janáček: Katya Kabanová). Ten. An engineer and teacher in Dikoj's employ. He is in love with Varvara, the Kabanov foster‐daughter. Boris confesses to him his love for Katya. Kudrjáš has a big argument with Dikoj about the nature of storms—Váňa knows they are caused by electricity in the air and wants his employer to install lightning conductors; Dikoj believes they are an act of God when his wrath has been aroused by sinful acts on earth. After Katya confesses her adultery, and Varvara is punished by the Kabanicha for being implicated, Kudrjáš decides they must escape the stifling atmosphere at her home and he and Varvara run away to Moscow.
