The name given to a vast region northeast of modern Delhi, said to have been ruled over by Kuru, and subsequently the site of the Kaurava capital, Hastināpura. Said to have been an ancient sacrificial area, those dying there were thought to go immediately to heaven. In the Mahābhārata, it is the location of the final battle between the Kauravas and Pāṇḍavas (see Bhagavadgītā 1.1).
