The great spirit of the Nuer tribesmen living in the southern Sudan. Kwoth, their god, has neither form nor fixed abode, but manifests himself in natural phenomena. The Nuer believe that he is compassionate and spares the poor and the miserable. The universe came into existence as an expression of his will, and is sustained by his activity. A just and righteous deity, Kwoth is said to punish the wicked—‘sooner or later’.
