Quick Reference

(Italian, ‘little lip’)

A stylized leaf contour with turned-back tips, used to decorate the sight edge, found on certain 18th-century Bolognese picture frames. Its scalloped contour picks up light and diffuses it in a flickering manner, entirely appropriate to the Rococo and the work of painters such as the Gandolfi.
