Governor-General of Algeria 1956–8

A former member of the Résistance, as Governor-General he gained a reputation for toughness, being held responsible for the official use of a host of ruthless measures (such as torture) against members of the Front de Libération Nationale. He served as Senator for the Dordogne, 1971–80.
