A heterogeneous group of Gram-positive bacteria that ferment carbohydrates to lactic acid as the main end-product. Homofermentative organisms convert fermentable carbohydrates almost quantitatively to lactic acid; heterofermentative organisms also produce acetic acid, ethanol, and CO2.
