A monotypic family, Lactoris fernandeziana, which is a shrub endemic to the Juan Fernandez Islands, off the S. American coast. The leaves are small and alternate, with stipules. The plants are monoecious but the flowers may be unisexual or bisexual. They comprise just 3 sepals, 6 stamens, and 3 carpels, and develop into follicles.
