Syn: lactase deficiency. An inherited inability to digest lactose, and therefore milk and many dairy products, usually caused by inability to synthesize the enzyme lactase. It is a common metabolic condition among many non-Caucasian peoples, that is, people of African, Asian, Native American, and Mediterranean origin.
