Dominican biblical scholar. In 1890 he founded at Jerusalem the ‘École Pratique d'Études Bibliques’. He supported Leo XIII's efforts to encourage the critical study of the Bible in the RC Church; his own position perhaps approached as near to that of the higher critics as was compatible with Catholic orthodoxy.
