A major character in the Rāmāyaṇa; the son of King Daśaratha and Sumitrā, the twin of Śatrughna, and the half-brother of Rāma, whom he accompanies into his forest exile. Epitomizing the devoted and loyal younger brother, he is also renowned for his devotion to Sītā. Some lists of avatāras give him as a partial incarnation (aṃśāvataraṇa) of Viṣṇu. See also Rāmāyaṇa.
