Quick Reference

He was secretary of the Bannatyne Club, editing many of its publications himself, and librarian of the Signet Library. His own library comprised more than 20,000 printed books and substantial MS collections, chiefly concerned with Scottish literature and history. His MSS were bequeathed to Edinburgh University, but his printed books were auctioned in four sales (seebook auctions) at Sotheby’s between December 1879 and February 1881 for more than £17,000.
