A lambda phage that is genetically engineered to serve as a receptor for foreign DNA fragments in recombinant DNA experiments. Vectors that have a single target site at which for eign DNA is inserted are called insertion vectors, those having a pair of sites that span a DNA segment that can be exchanged with a foreign DNA fragment are called replacement or substitution vectors.
