For over 700 years Lambeth has been the London residence of the Abps. of Canterbury. Abp. Baldwin (1185–90) acquired the manor and manor-house of Lambeth, though it was not described as ‘Lambeth Palace’ until c.1658. The Library, founded in 1610, has some 2,500 MSS, including the Registers of the archbishops from 1279 to 1928.
