chronicler. He became a monk at Hersfeld in 1058, and was the first abbot of Hasungen (Hesse). His Annals, which begin with the creation of the world, are detailed from 1072 to 1077. They were long regarded as the chief source for the struggle between Henry IV and Gregory VII; their accuracy was questioned in the 19th cent., but their value has now been largely rehabilitated.
