The brother and successor of Ralpachen, he became ruler of Tibet in 836 when he began a persecution and suppression of Buddhism at the instigation of several powerful Bön families who were hostile to Buddhism. He was assassinated by a Buddhist monk.Belgi Dorje (Tib., dpal gyi rdo je), an event commemorated in the so-called ‘Black Hat Dance’. After his assassination, the Tibetan royal dynasty of Yar lung ended and Tibet entered a period of civil and cultural chaos.
