Quick Reference

A type of cannon shot much used at sea by privateers during the 18th and early 19th centuries when attacking merchant vessels. It comprised various pieces of iron gathered together in a thin casing to fit the bore of the gun, which scattered widely when fired. Though meant to cut the sails and rigging of a ship, many privateer captains used it against the crews of their victims with lethal effect.
