(b Copenhagen, 1893; d Ribe, 1952).

Danish composer and organist. Début as org. 1904. His 1st sym. (1908–11) was perf. in Berlin, 1913. Influenced at first by Liszt and Bruckner, entered experimental phase 1916–24. Later became disciple of Nielsen and eventually Hindemith. In 1920s, after an Ivesian period, abandoned experimentation for a romantic style. Increasingly isolated, he became org. of Ribe Cath. in 1940. Works incl. opera Antikrist (1921–39); 16 syms. (1908–51); vn. conc. (1943–4); 8 str. qts. (1914–31); 5 vn. sonatas (1915–49); vocal and choral works; 6 pf. sonatas; 100 org. preludes; 150 songs.
