Syn: keyhole surgery. A surgical innovation, also called minimally invasive surgery, introduced for abdominal and joint surgery in which a small incision is made through which a fiberoptic instrument (laparoscope, arthroscope) is introduced into the peritoneal, pleural, or joint cavity, enabling the removal of diseased organs, damaged ligaments, etc., without operative trauma and prolonged postoperative recovery with all the risks of nosocomial infection and other misadventures associated with admission to a hospital.
