Quick Reference

One of three pre-Islamic goddesses worshiped at the Kaaba in Mecca prior to the rise of Islam. The name means “goddess.” Identified as “daughter of Allah,” since she was supposed to be the offspring of Allah's marriage to a jinn, but she may have been considered consort to Allah. Usually represented in human shape. The idol representing her was destroyed in 630 when Muhammad and Muslims conquered Mecca. Denounced in the Quran (53:19–20).

Subjects: Islam.
