In the mammalian somatic cell nucleus, all X chromosomes but one coil up into a condensed mass (the Barr body or sex chromatin body) and do not function in transcription. Such X chromosomes complete their replication later than the functional X and the autosomes. See Barr body, Lyon hypothesis, sex chromatin.
