Quick Reference

A spiral or irregular galaxy. The name comes from the conventional position of these galaxies in the tuning-fork diagram of galaxy types. For similar reasons, an Sc or Sd spiral galaxy may be referred to as a late-type spiral, as opposed to an early-type Sa or Sb spiral. See also hubble classification.
