Quick Reference

A milky fluid of mixed composition found in some herbaceous plants and trees. Its function is not clear but it may assist in protecting wounds (compare gum) and it may be involved in the nutrition of the plant. The latex of some species, notably rubber trees, is collected for commercial purposes.
