A hypersensitivity to natural latex characterized by skin irritation and inflammation (dermatitis), itchy eyes, nasal irritation; in severe cases it can result in anaphylaxis. Latex products include gloves, dental dam, prophylactic polishing cups, and the bungs in local anaesthetic cartridges. Latex allergy has become more common and presents a significant hazard in dentistry. See also latex dermatitis.
