An initiative announced in 2002 in which 30 schools drawn from the primary and secondary sectors were chosen to pioneer government strategies to reduce the workload of teachers. The initiative received £4 million in government funding; provided every teacher in the chosen schools with a networked laptop computer and Internet access; gave head teachers professional support in devising strategies to reduce workloads; and enabled schools to appoint extra support staff, including classroom assistants, and technicians to support the teaching of information technology.
