Born in Dalmatia, he was a key figure in the transition from Renaissance to the High Renaissance of Leonardo and Bramante. In 1465 he provided a design for the Palazzo Ducale, Urbino, and built the elegant arcaded cortile (1465–79). Many of the exquisite details (e.g. door-cases, chimney-pieces, etc.) in the palace were also by him.
